Knock Saul

The walk up Knock Saul near Duncanstone is steep and brief - we're talking twenty minutes of proper climbing to reach the summit. What you get for your effort is a viewpoint across Aberdeenshire's rolling farmland, with decent sightlines south towards the Cairngorms on a clear day. The peak itself isn't dramatic. There's no cairn, no trig point, just a grassy knoll where you'll stand catching your breath.

It works best as a leg-stretcher rather than a destination in itself. If you're staying at Haughton Holiday Park nearby, it's the kind of thing you'd do mid-morning before lunch - accessible without needing serious kit, and over before boredom sets in. Families with younger kids will find it manageable; older children might spend longer exploring the moorland around the base.

Timing matters. Come in mist and you'll see nothing. On a bright autumn morning when the light's golden across the fields, it's worth the slog. There's no charge to walk it, and no facilities at the top, so bring water. The real value here is the walk itself rather than the view - a chance to get out of the car for an hour rather than a proper expedition.
