Knightstone Island

You can walk out to Knightstone Island from Burnham-on-Sea at low tide - that's the main draw. It's a rocky outcrop just offshore, connected to the promenade by a causeway that disappears under water when the tide comes in, so timing is everything. The island itself is small, maybe ten minutes to explore properly, with a Victorian tower at the top that you can't actually enter but makes for decent photos. The real point is the walk and the views back towards the Bristol Channel.

It works best for anyone who likes a bit of tidal drama and doesn't mind the fact that the actual destination is modest. Families with young kids will get a kick out of it - there's something thrilling about walking somewhere that becomes an island. Keen walkers won't find much challenge, but it's a pleasant twenty-minute round trip from the seafront at Burnham. History enthusiasts should know the tower dates back to the 1820s and was built as a lookout, though these days it's more Instagram opportunity than functional landmark.

Free to visit, obviously - it's a walk across rocks. Allow an hour if you include the stroll back into town and a look at Burnham's shabby seaside charm. Go at low tide, check tide times before you set out. If you're staying at one of the parks dotted around this stretch - Channel View, Golden Sands, Yellow Sands - it's an easy drive or even a decent walk along the coast. Knightstone won't eat up a full day, but it's the sort of thing you do when you're in the area, not the reason you come to the area.
