Knighton Park

The moment you step into Knighton Park, you're in proper countryside, despite being practically on Leicester's doorstep. It's a nature reserve that actually feels like a nature reserve - wetland and grassland that genuinely matters for wildlife rather than just a manicured green space with a car park.

You'll spot water voles if you're lucky and patient, plus the usual suspects: dragonflies, butterflies, and more bird species than you'd expect so close to the city. The walking trails are straightforward, nothing too demanding, which makes it ideal for families who want their kids to burn energy without anyone complaining halfway round. Allow an hour or two depending on how often you stop to look at things.

Historically it's worth knowing this land was managed by monks centuries back, though you won't find ruins or interpretive boards shouting about it. It's more subtle than that. The reserve does proper conservation work - they manage the wetland specifically to keep it thriving, which is why it actually works as a nature spot.

If you're staying at Green Acres Caravan Park just down the road, this is an easy morning out. Similarly close to Fox's Furrow if you're based there. The admission situation isn't entirely clear from the park's end, but it's the sort of place that either costs nothing or a couple of quid. Worth ringing ahead to check.

Best visited in spring or early summer when the wildflowers are up and migrating birds are moving through. Winter's quieter but valid if you want solitude.
