Knattaborough Tor

The walk up to Knattaborough Tor rewards you with proper Devon moorland views and a clear vantage point over the countryside surrounding Exeter. It's not a dramatic spike like some tors - more of a solid hump with rock outcrops at the summit - but the approach is pleasant and the payoff genuine.

Mostly a walker's destination, this. You'll need decent legs and an hour or so to get up and down from the nearest parking, though the actual trail isn't technical. Families with older kids who can manage a steady climb will find it worthwhile; younger ones might get restless on the way up. The views aren't jaw-dropping, but they're extensive and on a clear day you'll spot across to distant hills.

There's no visitor infrastructure here - no cafe, no facilities - so bring what you need. Free to access, naturally. Spring and early autumn are best; winter gets muddy and summer can feel warm on the exposed sections.

If you're based at Woodland Springs Touring Park down near Exeter, this makes a solid morning excursion without needing to travel far. It slots nicely into a broader walking week in the area, where you can tackle bigger challenges like Hay Tor or Dartmoor's classic routes on other days. A decent half-day outing rather than a major attraction, but a proper taste of what makes Devon's high ground appealing.
