Knaresborough Castle and Courthouse Museum

The ruins of Knaresborough Castle dominate the riverbank like a broken tooth, and once you're up there looking down at the market town tumbling toward the River Nidd, you'll understand why the Normans bothered building it in the first place. The castle itself is mostly scaffolding and stone stumps now - the English Civil War did proper damage - but the views alone justify the climb. The attached Courthouse Museum is the real draw for history types. It's compact, focused, and tells the story of local justice from medieval times through to the Victorian era without the tedious padding you get in bigger museums. You'll spend a solid hour here, maybe ninety minutes if you linger over the exhibits. The castle grounds are free to wander; the museum has a small entry fee. Families with younger kids might find the ruins a bit underwhelming on their own, but the museum's interactive elements and the riverside walks around the base keep things from feeling like a complete washout. If you're staying at Knaresborough Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite - which is barely ten minutes away - this is an obvious morning or early afternoon stop. The castle's dramatic position means you'll get decent photos whatever the weather, though go late afternoon if you want the sun behind you rather than in your eyes. Town centre location means you can grab lunch after without backtracking.
