You won't find crowds or signposted trails at Kitscrew Wood - it's a proper working forest rather than a manicured attraction, which is half the appeal. The woodland sits north of York and feels genuinely removed from the city, even though it's only a few miles out. Walking through here, you get dense conifers mixed with deciduous trees depending on the season, soft ground underfoot, and that particular quiet you only find in managed forests.

It's best suited to walkers who don't need waymarked routes or interpretive boards. If you're the type who enjoys picking your own path through trees, this delivers. Kids might find it a bit samey after 30 minutes - there are no natural features or clearings to break things up, and mobile signal tends to be patchy. That said, if you're after a proper woodland walk without the National Trust gift shop experience, Kitscrew does exactly what it says.

Access appears to be free, though the website is non-existent and there's no obvious visitor centre. Allow an hour minimum if you actually want to explore rather than just walk through. Spring and early autumn are probably best - winter can be muddy and overgrown summer growth narrows the paths. It pairs well with a stay at York Meadows Caravan & Camping Park, just outside the city, giving you woodland on your doorstep without having to drive far. The forest works as a decent warm-up walk before tackling York itself, or a way to get some air between city days.
