Kirkton Parish Church, Carluke

There's something quietly compelling about stumbling upon a proper working parish church in the middle of South Lanarkshire. Kirkton Parish Church sits in Carluke, just a short drive from Lanark, and it's one of those places that rewards a ten-minute detour without demanding much of your time.

The building itself is typical of rural Scottish kirks - solid, unpretentious, and clearly still serving its congregation rather than existing solely for the tourist trail. You'll find the usual mix of stone work and bell tower, and the interior, if you catch it open, shows that comfortable worn-in quality of churches that have been in use for generations. There's no gift shop, no dramatic backstory plastered on interpretation boards, and that's rather the point.

This works best for people with a genuine interest in Scottish religious architecture or those doing a proper slow tour of the Lowlands. Families won't find much to occupy them here, and it's definitely not a day-long activity. But if you're based at Ecosse Glamping just down the road and fancy a gentle walk into Carluke itself, the church is worth fifteen minutes of your time.

Visiting is free, obviously. Your best bet is a weekday morning or early afternoon - you'll stand a better chance of finding it unlocked. In good weather, the surrounding churchyard is pleasant enough for a brief wander. It's the sort of place that reminds you Scotland's rural heritage isn't all dramatic ruins and Highland vistas.
