Kirkton Hill, dun site

You won't find a queue here. Kirkton Hill is a proper Iron Age settlement - a dun site that's been quietly sitting on the landscape for nearly two thousand years, just outside Perth. The remains are subtle: earthworks and stone foundations that tell you someone built something defensible and serious here, but you've got to use your imagination a bit.

What you're looking at is a fortified homestead from around the 1st century AD. The site itself is relatively small, which means you can walk the whole thing in half an hour if you're moving briskly, or an hour if you're stopping to look at how the defences were laid out. It's the kind of place that clicks into focus once you realise what you're standing on - not just any old hillside, but a deliberate choice: high enough for lookout, defensible, controlling the approach.

This is squarely for archaeology enthusiasts and history-focused walkers rather than kids expecting something dramatic. There's no interpretation board I could spot, no visitor facilities, so come prepared with a guidebook or do your homework beforehand. It's free to visit, open whenever the hills are.
