Kirkton Church

The pale stone walls of Kirkton Church catch the light as you approach through the quiet Lanark countryside. It's a modest medieval building, nothing flashy, but there's something genuinely moving about standing inside a church that's been doing the same job for nearly 900 years.

You won't find crowds here. This is the kind of place where you can actually hear yourself think - and where locals still worship. The interior is straightforward: stone floors, wooden pews, clear glass windows that let the Scottish light pour through. If you're into ecclesiastical history, there are details worth studying - the masonry, the way it's been altered and repaired over centuries. For most visitors though, it's a twenty-minute stop, not a destination in itself.

It works best as part of a wider wander around Lanark rather than a pilgrimage on its own. The town's got decent shops and the falls are worth seeing if you're in the area anyway. If you're staying at Ecosse Glamping, just three miles away, you could easily pop over while exploring the local footpaths - though I'd check opening times before you go, as small churches can be temperamental about visitors during the week.

Kids will be bored after five minutes. Walkers using it as a landmark en route to something else - now that makes sense.
