You'll find yourself among towering conifers and mixed woodland just outside Annan, where Kirkbeck Plantation offers a proper escape from the Dumfries & Galloway coast without demanding much effort. It's a working forest rather than a manicured country park - the kind of place where you crunch through needle-carpeted paths and actually see timber management happening around you.

The woodland is straightforward but rewarding for walkers of varying ability. You can wander for twenty minutes or stretch it to a couple of hours depending on your mood and the trails you fancy. The open areas give decent views across the surrounding countryside, and it's the sort of spot where families with primary-school age kids won't get antsy after half an hour - there's genuinely something to explore at every turn.

Timing-wise, it's best visited when the ground isn't waterlogged, so spring through autumn works well. Dumfries & Galloway weather being what it is, expect it damp regardless, but the forest canopy offers decent shelter. Access appears to be free, though facilities are minimal - not even a car park sign visible, so arrive early if it's a weekend.

If you're camping at West Moss-Side Livery or Queensberry Bay just down the road, Kirkbeck makes an ideal morning or early evening stretch without the faff of driving somewhere fancy. It won't blow your mind, but it's honest woodland walking on your doorstep.
