Kirk Craigs

Kirk Craigs rises abruptly from the landscape near Clackmannan like an afterthought - a stubby, dramatic peak that punches well above its height. The walk up is short and sharp, which means you're either delighted by the brisk climb or mildly cross about how steep it is for what's essentially a big hill. I'd say go with the former.

The summit rewards you with genuinely excellent views across Clackmannanshire and into the surrounding lowlands. On a clear day, you can pick out the Forth Valley stretching away. The climb takes maybe 45 minutes depending on fitness and where you're starting from, so it's ideal if you've got limited time but want something that feels proper rather than a gentle stroll.

Families will find it manageable if the kids are reasonably confident walkers - nothing technical, just steep. History buffs might appreciate the connection to Clackmannan's mining heritage, visible in the landscape itself. There's something satisfying about this landscape: industrial past slowly being overtaken by nature.

It's free, obviously - there's a hill, you climb it. No facilities at the top, so bring water. Winter can be boggy and slippery, so spring through autumn is genuinely better. Worth the detour if you're in the area and like straightforward hill walks with actual views rather than the slog-to-nowhere type.
