Kintbury

The earthworks at Kintbury sit quietly in the Hampshire countryside just outside Newbury, and unless you know exactly what you're looking at, you could walk straight past them. This is Iron Age hill fort territory - we're talking ramparts and ditches that once formed a proper defensive settlement, now softened by centuries of grass and time.

Walking the perimeter takes a decent stretch of legs, and the layered defensive banks are genuinely interesting if you're into that sort of archaeology. The views out across the landscape from the higher points are decent too, though nothing that'll make your jaw drop. What you get here is a real sense of how people chose to live and protect themselves two thousand years ago - no fancy interpretation boards or visitor facilities, just the physical evidence doing the talking.

History buffs will find it worthwhile. Kids might get restless unless they're the type who enjoy clambering over banks and playing fort. Walkers will appreciate it as part of a longer stomp around the area rather than a destination in itself. The nearest town of Newbury has proper facilities if you need a tea stop afterwards.
