Kinnoull Hill

The walk up Kinnoull Hill from Perth takes about forty minutes if you're moving at a steady pace, and the reward is a proper panorama across the Tay Valley and down towards the city itself. There's a folly - a fake castle tower - perched right at the top, which feels a bit daft in the best possible way, and you can clamber inside if you're that way inclined. The hill itself is manageable rather than challenging, making it ideal for families who want a decent walk without anyone complaining their legs have fallen off.

On a clear day, you're looking across farmland and woodland that stretches for miles. The Tay snakes through it all below. In autumn the colours are genuinely worth the trip alone. Most people do this as a lunchtime jaunt from Perth, so mornings tend to be quieter if you want to avoid the weekend crush.

It's free, obviously - just a walk. Allow two hours round trip if you're taking your time and actually stopping to look at the view rather than rushing back for a pub lunch. The path is decent most of the way, though it gets a bit steep and rooty near the top, so decent boots make sense.

If you're camped at Scone Camping and Caravanning Club Site or Perth Caravan Park, this is genuinely worth an afternoon. Kids will find the tower amusing, walkers get a solid route without needing crampons, and you're back in time for tea.
