Kinneil Roman Fortlet

The Roman walls at Kinneil stand on a headland near Dunfermline, and they're genuinely striking when you realise you're looking at structures that have survived nearly two thousand years of Scottish weather. It's a fortlet - a small auxiliary fort that once guarded this stretch of the Firth of Forth during Rome's occupation of Britain.

You don't get much of a building here, which is the honest truth. What you see are stone foundations and the outline of where the ramparts ran, plus some interpretation panels that explain what life was like for the soldiers stationed in this remote corner of the empire. History types will find it fascinating - there's something rather moving about standing where a Roman sentry once stood, looking out across the same water.

It won't eat up much time. An hour maximum, including the walk around the site and a proper look at any displays. The setting is the real draw though - windswept and atmospheric rather than polished tourist attraction. That said, younger children might get bored quickly without a specific interest in Romans.

It's worth combining with a park stay at West Fife Pods if you're exploring this corner of Fife. The drive from Dunfermline takes minutes. Go when you've got time to wander; don't cram it into a rushed morning. The walk to the fortlet is manageable, though the ground can be soft after rain. Best on a clear day when you can actually see across the water.
