Kinneil Estate

The walk around Kinneil Estate is one of those stretches that creeps up on you. You start expecting a quick potter through the grounds near Dunfermline, and suddenly you're properly engaged with the place - woodland paths that actually lead somewhere, open parkland that gives your lungs a proper work-out, and views that shift with every bend in the track.

It's a nature reserve now, which means the old estate has been left to do what estates do best: go a bit wild. The trees have colonised the spaces between the formal bits, creating this odd hybrid landscape where you can sense the history without tripping over heritage plaques every five minutes. Walkers get the most from it - bring proper boots if you've had rain, because the paths can get boggy - but families won't be bored either, especially if your kids are past the "carry me" phase. Allow a good two hours if you want to actually look at things rather than just trudge through.

There's no visitor centre nonsense here, which is either brilliant or a bit frustrating depending on your mood. It's free to roam, which is generous. The nearest town is Dunfermline, so you could combine this with a proper historical afternoon if you're into that sort of thing. If you're camping at West Fife Pods - just 4.5 miles away - this makes a solid morning or afternoon excursion without needing to drive far. Best visited when the ground's had a few dry days, or you'll spend half your time wiping mud off your shoes.
