What remains today is just this - a single tower, honest and worn, with the weight of about 900 years hanging off its walls. You can see the abbey's former scale in the stonework, though the rest dissolved into time and probably stone-robbed locals centuries ago.

It's a straightforward stop rather than a destination in itself. History buffs will spend twenty minutes examining the masonry and imagining the monastery that sprawled around it. Kids under ten might find it a bit dull after five. The gatehouse sits accessible and free, though there's nothing curated about it - no interpretation boards, no facilities, just the building itself on public view.

This works best tacked onto a broader Cotswolds wander around Dursley itself, especially if you're basing yourself at Pepper Pot Caravan Park or the five-star glamping at Wixoldbury Farm. The town has proper charm and a functioning high street, so you can tie the abbey gatehouse into a morning walk, grab lunch, and move on to something else - Forest of Dean is an easy drive north if you want serious green space.

Go if you're into medieval architecture and don't mind bare bones heritage. Skip if you need context and crowds. The Cotswolds have plenty of grander abbeys if this doesn't grab you.
