Kingsthorpe North Meadows

The meadows sprawl across the northern edge of Northampton in a way that feels properly removed from the town centre - a genuine escape rather than a token green space. You're walking through open grassland dotted with wildflowers, particularly good in late spring when the place comes alive with purples and yellows. The reserve is flat and straightforward, which makes it ideal if you've got young legs to tire out but aren't keen on the hills.

It's a working nature reserve, so what you see depends on the season and management. Summer brings insects and birds; winter reveals the structure of the place. There are paths through and around the meadows, though nothing particularly dramatic - this is gentle countryside rather than dramatic landscape. You'll spot common birds and if you're lucky, butterflies on a decent day.

Walkers and nature enthusiasts get the most from this. Kids under ten might find an hour about right; older ones could potter about longer if they're into spotting things. It's free to access, which is the main pull. Allow 45 minutes to an hour depending on how slowly you move.
