Kingsbury Water Park

The moment you arrive at Kingsbury Water Park, you realise this isn't some manicured country estate - it's a genuine working landscape where nature and industry have struck an unexpected truce. Sprawling across 600 acres near Atherstone, the park is built on reclaimed gravel extraction sites that have been flooded and left to rewild over the past few decades. What you get now is a patchwork of lakes, wetland and woodland that's become a proper haven for birdwatchers and casual walkers alike.

There's a decent trail network threading through the site, with plenty of spots to pull up and watch the water. On a clear day you'll spot kingfishers, herons, and if you're lucky, the occasional osprey passing through. It's not dramatically scenic - no dramatic vistas or sweeping panoramas - but there's something quietly satisfying about a landscape that's genuinely wild rather than designed to be.

Family groups will find it manageable; the paths are mostly level and accessible, though buggies can be tough in places depending on recent weather. Serious birders, though, will get far more out of it. Allow a couple of hours if you're just having a wander, longer if you've brought binoculars and a field guide.
