King's Manor - University of York

The centrepiece of York's university campus sits right in the city centre, and it's properly impressive if you know what you're looking at. King's Manor is a Tudor and Stuart building that served as the residence of the King's Council in the North - basically the royal seat of power for the entire northern half of England back in the day. Now it's the administrative heart of the University of York, and you can wander through parts of it without needing a student ID.

What strikes you immediately is how it dominates the street. The timber-framing is genuine, the stonework substantial, and there's real weight to the place. You'll see courtyards, Renaissance features, and the kind of detail that makes historians genuinely excited. The gardens round the back offer a surprisingly quiet spot in the middle of bustling York, which is exactly what you need after battling the crowds near the Minster.

It's worth a 20-minute detour if you're interested in Tudor architecture or royal history. Families with bored teenagers might find it a bit static - there's not much hands-on happening. But if you're staying at Nurseries Caravan Park just outside York, it's absolutely worth the short drive in to see how the other half lived during England's most dramatic centuries.

Free to look around externally and through accessible courtyards, though some internal areas require permission. Pop in during university term time for the best chance of exploring further.
