Kinglsey Smythe

The Kingsley Smythe nature reserve sits just outside Wantage and is the sort of place that rewards a proper wander rather than a quick visit. Woodland paths wind through mixed habitat - scrub, grassland, and mature trees - where you've got a decent chance of spotting woodland birds and the odd deer if you're quiet about it. It's genuinely peaceful, which is rare this close to town.

Walkers will get the most from it. The trails are manageable without being trivial, and there's enough variety to keep you interested for a couple of hours. Families with older kids who don't need constant stimulus will find it worthwhile; younger ones might lose patience fairly quickly once they've climbed a tree or two. Bird enthusiasts should bring binoculars - the mix of habitats tends to attract a decent range of species depending on season.

It's free to access, which is always a bonus. There's no visitor centre or facilities to speak of, so come prepared with water and decent shoes. Spring and early summer are best - the place comes alive with nesting birds and wildflowers. Winter's quieter but moody if you like that sort of thing.

If you're staying at one of the nearby glamping spots like Evelyns Garden or Lorne Hill Farm, this makes a natural morning or afternoon activity. It's close enough to reach without faffing about with car journeys, but isolated enough to feel like you've actually got away from things. Not spectacular, but honestly proper value for a free nature reserve.
