Kingfisher Country Park

The lake dominates everything here - a proper focal point when you drive into Kingfisher Country Park just outside Coventry. It's the kind of place that works best on a clear day, when you can actually see why someone bothered making a park around a body of water in the Midlands.

You're here to walk, mostly. The paths loop round the water with decent views if you time it right, and there's enough space that you won't feel hemmed in by other visitors. It's popular with bird spotters - the name isn't ironic - so bring binoculars if you're into that sort of thing. Families with younger kids find it manageable, though don't expect dramatic scenery or proper adventure playground equipment. A couple of hours covers the main circuit without rushing.

Walkers get more mileage here. The terrain is flat and accessible, which means it suits anyone wanting a gentle amble rather than a serious hike. The views can feel a bit ordinary depending on the time of year and weather - early morning or late afternoon light helps enormously.

It works well as a morning stop if you're based at Somers Wood Caravan Park, five miles away. Close enough for a quick visit without feeling like a trek, but not so close that it dominates your day. Pair it with exploring Coventry itself if you're after a bit more variety. Bring a packed lunch and settle on one of the benches if the weather plays ball.
