King Stone

A weathered lump of stone standing alone in a field near Chipping Norton - that's the King Stone, and it's been there for around 4,000 years. Bronze Age folk erected it, probably as a burial marker or territorial boundary, and despite centuries of ploughing around it, the thing's still upright. You won't find a visitor centre or a café. There's just the stone, the Cotswold landscape, and your own questions about why ancient people bothered dragging it here.

History buffs will find it quietly compelling - the sort of thing that makes you actually think about deep time rather than just scroll past a photo. Kids under ten will probably lose interest after ten minutes unless you spin them a decent yarn about Bronze Age warriors. Walkers are the real audience here. It's the kind of stop you make while crossing the Cotswolds on foot, a legitimate reason to leave the marked path and follow a track through farmland.

It's free, obviously. No gates, no opening hours, no phone number. Just show up. Allow fifteen minutes maximum unless you've got a proper archaeology interest. Spring and early summer are best - the fields are drier and the light's kinder on old stone.

Cotswold Hills Country Park sits just 2.6 miles away, and there's the Camping and Caravanning Club Site nearer town if you want proper facilities.
