Kilwood Nature Reserve

The heath stretches out in front of you - low, scrubby, and honestly a bit raw compared to what you might expect. Kilwood Nature Reserve sits just outside Wareham and protects one of Dorset's precious heathland patches, the kind of landscape that's vanishing faster than anyone likes to admit.

It's not a manicured spot. You're here to walk quietly and spot things - silver-studded blues, smooth snakes if you're lucky, and the characteristic heather that gives these heaths their character. Birdwatchers tend to do well here, particularly in spring and early summer. The paths are straightforward enough for families, though younger kids might find 20 minutes is their limit before asking when you're leaving.

There's no visitor centre, no café, no facilities to speak of. It's free to access and works best as a proper walk rather than a quick stop-off. Allow a couple of hours if you're genuinely interested in the wildlife, but 45 minutes covers the essentials without fatigue.

For a park-based holiday, it slots nicely into a broader Purbeck exploration. Luckford Wood and Woodyhyde are both within easy striking distance, and you could combine this with walks around Wareham itself or push out towards Swanage Bay View if you're after coastal time. The reserve won't captivate you for a full day, but as part of a varied itinerary it punches above its weight. Best visited in dry conditions - the heath can be boggy.
