Kiln Copse

Walk into Kiln Copse and you're swallowed by proper Surrey woodland - the sort of place where the path narrows enough that you have to brush past low branches and your feet sink into soft leaf litter. It's a forest rather than a manicured country estate, which means gnarled oaks, dense undergrowth, and the genuine quiet you don't get in managed parks. There's no visitor centre or marked trails here, just woodland to explore at your own pace.

This is one for walkers and nature types rather than families wanting attractions. Kids might manage an hour of wandering before the appeal of "more trees" wears thin, but if you're the sort who actually enjoys being among proper woodland without the crowds, it's excellent. The nearest town is Horsham, just a few miles south, which gives it a natural slot in a Surrey countryside break.

The beauty of Kiln Copse is that it costs nothing and requires no planning. Turn up, park somewhere sensible at the edge, and walk. No opening hours to fight, no gift shop, no Instagram backdrop nonsense. That said, it's very much a "bring your own adventure" kind of place - there's no interpretation, no toilet facilities that we can find, and no real infrastructure.

If you're staying at one of the nearby campsites - Riverside Farm is closest at under three miles - it's a solid option for a morning woodland walk to break up a holiday. Pair it with a visit to Horsham town centre or the surrounding villages and you've got a decent day. Worth the detour? Only if walking through unmanicured woodland appeals to you. If you need paths, benches, and a tearoom, look elsewhere.
