Kilmun Parish Church

The churchyard at Kilmun sits right on the water's edge, which is the first thing that strikes you - not many parish churches have the Firth of Clyde lapping at their boundary. It's a proper working church, relatively modest in size, with some real history tucked away among the gravestones and yew trees. The building itself dates back centuries, though it's been rebuilt and restored more than once, and inside there's decent period detail if you catch it open.

What makes it worth the detour from Dunoon - just a short drive away - is the setting rather than any grand architecture. The churchyard feels genuinely peaceful, and there's something absorbing about wandering among headstones that go back generations, reading the names of old Argyll families. On a clear day the water views are proper lovely. It's not a major tourist draw, which means you won't be jostled by crowds, but it does reward a quiet twenty minutes of your time.

If you're staying at one of the nearby parks - Hunters Quay Holiday Village or Stratheck are both within reach - this makes an easy morning or late afternoon stop. Don't expect craft shops or a tearoom. Admission appears to be free, and there's no formal opening hours as it's an active parish church. Go when you feel like it, but do respect that it's a place of worship first. Most folk won't spend more than half an hour here, which is fine - it's the kind of spot that works best as part of a broader Cowal Peninsula wander rather than a destination in itself.
