Kilminning Community Nature Reserve (Crail Community Partnership)

The clifftop path at Kilminning winds along the Fife coast just outside Crail, offering proper coastal walking without the tourist crowds you'd find further west. It's a straightforward reserve run by the local community partnership, and what you get is genuine - windswept grassland, rocky outcrops, and views across the Firth of Forth that stretch on for miles when the light's right.

This is walker territory, frankly. The paths are well-maintained but exposed, so bring a windproof even in summer. You'll spot seabirds without much effort, and on a clear day the geology alone makes the walk worthwhile. Families with older kids will manage fine; younger ones might find it a bit bleak and repetitive after 40 minutes or so.

Allow two hours for a proper circular route, longer if you're the sort who stops to sketch or photograph. Free access - just turn up. Winter's actually when it looks its best, all dramatic skies and crashing waves, though the wind can be fierce.

Stay at Sauchope Links or one of the other caravan parks nearby and you're perfectly placed. Anstruther's close enough for fish suppers, and the reserve makes a solid half-day outing between exploring the town and meandering through East Neuk. It won't thrill you if you're after rare species or dramatic geology, but it's honest, accessible coastal walking with character.
