Killoeter

The walk up Killoeter isn't long, but it's proper steep in places and you'll feel it in your legs by the summit. This wee peak sits just above Alexandria in Argyll, commanding views across to Loch Lomond and the surrounding hills - on a clear day you can see right across to Ben Lomond itself. It's the sort of hill that rewards you quickly without demanding a full day's commitment.

Most walkers tackle it in under two hours return, which makes it ideal if you're staying at one of the nearby parks and want to stretch your legs without committing to a full Munro expedition. Families with older kids will manage it fine, though younger ones might find the steeper sections tedious. There's something satisfying about standing at the top of a hill you've actually earned rather than driven to, and Killoeter delivers that feeling without the long slog.

The area around Alexandria and Loch Lomond is rammed with holiday parks - Loch Lomond Retreat is genuinely well-rated if you want a base with decent facilities. Stoneymollan and Lomond Woods are handier for this walk specifically, sitting just a couple of miles away. Parking and access details aren't widely publicised, so your best bet is asking locally when you arrive. Go early on a weekend to avoid the crowds heading to bigger hills nearby. The views alone make the twenty-minute push to the top worthwhile.
