Kilcadzow Law

The walk up Kilcadzow Law isn't long, but it's steep enough to leave you breathing hard. This volcanic peak rises above the Clyde Valley near Lanark, and from the top you get proper views across South Lanarkshire - rolling farmland, distant hills, and on a clear day, you can see well beyond Lanark itself.

It's a straightforward hill walk rather than a technical climb. Allow about an hour return if you're moving at a decent pace, though most people take longer to soak in the views from the summit. The path can be muddy after rain, so wear something with grip. There's no visitor centre or facilities at the top - just you, the wind, and the landscape spreading out below.

This works best for walkers who want something achievable without hauling themselves up a mountain for hours. Kids aged eight and up will manage it fine, though younger ones might find the gradient testing. History types will appreciate that you're walking on an ancient volcanic outcrop - the geology here is interesting if you know what you're looking at.

If you're staying at Ecosse Glamping just down the road, it's an ideal morning outing before settling in for a relaxed afternoon. The peak itself is free to visit, and you can start your walk from the small car park at the base. Go early if you want the best light and fewer people about. Worth the walk, though it's more about the leg-stretch and views than any dramatic summit experience.
