Kielder Forest

Kielder Forest is one of the largest man-made forests in England, and it's absolutely massive - over 150 square miles of Sitka spruce and larch stretching across the Northumberland hills near Hexham. You don't just visit it; you experience it. The forest wraps around Kielder Water reservoir, and the whole landscape has this moody, atmospheric quality that feels properly remote even though civilisation isn't far away.

Walkers will find their feet here. There are trails threading through the trees at every difficulty level - from gentle lakeside strolls to proper hill hikes that'll test your legs. Mountain bikers have carved out their own reputation too, with dedicated routes that range from family-friendly to properly technical. Birdwatchers get excited about Kielder; it's a stronghold for ospreys and red squirrels, and the quiet forest means you've got a genuine chance of spotting wildlife without the crowds you'd fight elsewhere.

The landscape has changed completely in the past 20 years. Where once it felt a bit forbidding and uniform, the Forestry Commission has opened things up brilliantly - visitor centres, viewpoints, cafes. You can spend half a day here without breaking a sweat, or make it a proper weekend expedition. If you're camping nearby at Kielder Campsite or staying at Landal Kielder Waterside, the forest becomes your playground. Allow at least a full day to do it justice. Spring and autumn feel best - the light comes through differently, and you'll avoid the summer school holiday crush.
