Kes Tor Round Pound

High on the moorland between Exeter and the wilds of Dartmoor sits Kes Tor Round Pound, a stone-built enclosure that's been here since Iron Age times. Walking up to it, you're climbing proper Devonshire upland - windswept, open, with views that stretch for miles. The pound itself is circular, ringed by the remnants of ancient walls. Not spectacular to look at, if you're honest, but stand there and think about the people who built it for their livestock two thousand years ago and it gets under your skin.

History enthusiasts will find this worthwhile. It's the sort of place where you can piece together how people lived in the Iron Age without any crowds or visitor centres getting in the way. Families with older kids who can handle a decent moorland walk will enjoy it too - the hike itself is as much the draw as the site. You'll need a good map or GPS though, as signposting is minimal and the moor can look much the same in all directions.

It's free and takes about an hour to reach from the nearest access point, depending on your fitness. Go in clearer weather - moorland mist makes navigation tiresome. If you're staying at Woodland Springs Touring Park or Barley Meadow, both close to Exeter, this works as a half-day expedition on wheels and boot leather. It's not a showstopper attraction, but for anyone serious about archaeology or willing to get off the beaten track, it's absolutely worth the effort.
