Keith and Dufftown Railway

The Keith and Dufftown Railway runs between these two Speyside towns on a stretch of track that closed to regular trains back in 1968. You're riding in vintage carriages - mostly from the 1950s - pulled by a diesel locomotive that's seen better days but runs like it means it. The journey takes about 16 miles through proper countryside, past farmland and the occasional distillery, and takes roughly an hour each way.

It's the kind of thing railway enthusiasts will absolutely love, but families with younger kids might find it a bit samey after twenty minutes staring out the window. The real draw is the nostalgia and the volunteers who genuinely care about keeping heritage railways alive. Keith itself is the main jumping-off point, a working market town rather than a theme park version of one.

You'll need to check their website for running dates - it's seasonal, so this isn't an every-weekend operation. Admission costs a handful of quid, though prices fluctuate. Allow a couple of hours if you're doing the round trip including a bit of pottering about at either end.

If you're based at Hillside Havens, just down the road, this makes a decent half-day outing on a Scottish drizzle afternoon. It works better if you're already interested in railways or local history rather than treating it as a standalone attraction. The Speyside whisky trail is closer to Dufftown if you want to combine visits.
