Keillor standing stone

You'll find this Bronze Age standing stone just outside Blairgowrie, and it's the sort of place that stops you in your tracks. Keillor Stone stands alone in a field, weathered and substantial, a proper monument to whoever raised it four thousand years ago. It's not flashy or touristy - there's no visitor centre, no gift shop, no queue. Just you, the stone, and an awful lot of history.

The walk to reach it is straightforward enough, though you'll want to park sensibly and ask locally for the exact spot if you're not used to reading the landscape. Once you're there, it's hard not to feel a bit small standing next to something that's witnessed that much time pass. History buffs will find it genuinely moving. Kids might manage twenty minutes before asking if there's anywhere else to go - it's not a morning's entertainment on its own.

If you're based at Five Roads Caravan Park nearby, it makes a decent afternoon detour when the weather's decent. The Perthshire countryside around Blairgowrie is cracking for walks anyway, so you're not making a special journey just for the stone. Go on a clear day if you can. The light catches it better, and the views across the farmland are worth the drive.
