Juncan Pot

The walk to Juncan Pot takes you through proper Highland scenery - moorland, rough grass, the kind of landscape that makes you remember why you came north. It's a waterfall and pool situation in Aberdeenshire, the sort of place locals know about and visitors stumble across by accident.

The pool itself is dark and deep, fed by a decent drop of water. On a grey day it looks moody and dramatic. On a sunny one, if you time it right, you get that rare Highland light bouncing off the water. The surrounding terrain is rough underfoot - not a manicured tourist spot by any stretch.

Walkers will get the most from this. It's not a five-minute car park stroll; you need to commit to the walk and be comfortable with moorland paths. Families with small children might find it frustrating - the terrain's unforgiving and there's nowhere to sit down for a picnic. History buffs won't find much here, but anyone after a bit of wild Scotland will appreciate the remoteness.

Huntly is the nearest town, about eight kilometres away, which means you're staying local if you're basing yourself in the area. The Huntly Castle Holiday Park is close enough to make this a decent half-day activity if you're already in the region. There's no charge that I'm aware of - it's just landscape and elbow grease. Go early morning or late afternoon if you can. The light's better and you'll likely have the place to yourself.
