Judith's Field Recreation Centre

A few minutes' drive east of Huntingdon sits Judith's Field, a proper little nature reserve that punches above its weight if you're keen on birds and wetland wildlife. It's the kind of place where you can spend an afternoon poking about in the reeds without crowds or fuss - just you, the water, and whatever's nesting that season.

The reserve centres around shallow pools and marshland, ideal for spotting waders, ducks, and the occasional rarer visitor if you time it right. There's a walking trail that lets you get close to the action without disturbing things, and if you've got binoculars and a decent bird guide, you'll get proper value from a couple of hours here. Kids who've already got the nature bug will love it; toddlers might find it a bit static.

No formal facilities to speak of, so bring your own supplies and sensible footwear - it can be boggy after rain. Entry appears to be free, though it's worth checking locally when you arrive, as opening arrangements for smaller reserves can be fluid.

If you're basing yourselves at one of the nearby caravan parks - Huntingdon Boathaven is just over a mile away, or Quiet Waters and Wyton Lakes are both within a couple of miles - this makes for a proper morning or afternoon outing. Pair it with a wander through Huntingdon town centre or a trip further afield to Grafham Water if you want a bigger day out. It's low-key, free from hype, and that's exactly its charm.
