Judd's Wood

Tall oaks and beech trees make up the bulk of Judd's Wood, a proper working forest just outside Faversham that feels miles away from the Kent coast you've probably come to see. The woodland floor is thick with moss and last season's leaves - it's the sort of place where you actually notice the quiet.

Walking here is straightforward enough. There are tracks that loop through the trees without being so well-trodden that you feel herded. The woodland canopy does a job on rainy days, though it's never completely dry underfoot. Birdwatchers do well here, and families with kids under ten seem to get the most out of it before boredom sets in. Pushchairs are possible on the main paths but it's not ideal. Allow 45 minutes to an hour for a decent walk without rushing.

The real value is as a breathing space between the holiday parks and the coast. If you're staying at Painters Farm - which is barely a mile away - or Seasalter Holiday Park, this breaks up a long day of beach time. It's free to wander and there's no entrance gate or visitor centre to navigate. The best time is autumn when the light comes sideways through the trees and actually feels special.

One word of caution: it's genuinely easy to lose your bearings if you stray from the main paths. Keep to the marked routes and you're fine. Bring a map if you're feeling uncertain.
