Jubilee Gardens

Just outside Fleetwood, Jubilee Gardens sits along the Wyre estuary - a proper working nature reserve rather than a manicured park. You're here to watch birds, mainly. Waders in winter, breeding species come spring, the whole lot shifts with the seasons. The reserve spans grassland and mudflat, so bring binoculars and decent walking boots because the paths get boggy.

It's best for serious twitchers and keen naturalists. Casual visitors might find an hour enough unless you're genuinely into identifying dunlin from sanderling at distance. The light can be extraordinary in late afternoon, particularly if you catch the sun catching the water just right. Autumn migration brings the crowds of birdwatchers - that's when it genuinely hums with activity.

The reserve is free to access, which is the one thing everyone gets right about Jubilee. Allow two to three hours if you're doing the full circuit and actually stopping to look at things. It's compact enough not to feel like an endurance test.

If you're staying at Haven Cala Gran or Broadwater - both within a mile or so - this works as a morning activity before heading into Fleetwood proper for lunch. Pointer Farm Campsite and Bowses Hill Farm further out make it a reasonable detour. The paths can flood after heavy rain, so check conditions beforehand. Go in spring or autumn for the best wildlife action.
