Johnsons Covert

A proper woodland walk rather than a destination in itself, Johnsons Covert sits just outside Market Harborough in Northamptonshire and delivers exactly what you'd hope for from a country forest - ancient trees, quiet paths, and the sort of peace that makes you forget you're only minutes from civilization.

The covert itself is manageable on foot, with a network of woodland trails threading through mixed broadleaf and conifer stands. It's the kind of place where you might spot a roe deer if you're patient, or at least hear the woodland birds properly. There's no visitor centre or facilities to speak of, which is refreshingly honest - this is about walking, not consuming an experience.

For families with young walkers, allow an hour or so. Older kids who actually enjoy forests rather than viewing platforms will happily spend longer. Serious woodland enthusiasts might find it a bit compact, but that's not really the point. If you're staying at one of the nearby caravan parks - Buttercup Meadow CL is closest at just under three miles - it's an easy leg-stretch between pitches and other activities.

Timing-wise, visit during spring if you can bear the muddy boots situation, or autumn when the light cuts through the trees properly. Summer can feel a bit claustrophobic under full leaf cover. The real value here is proximity rather than drama. It's not worth a special trip from Leicester or Nottingham, but if you're based locally for a week, it's well worth an afternoon wander.
