Johnson Park

Johnson Park sits on the outskirts of Yeovil and is a proper working nature reserve, the kind of place where you might actually spot something interesting rather than just wander around on a manicured loop. It's managed land, so there's intent behind what's been planted and left to grow wild.

The reserve offers a decent escape from town without needing a long drive. Woodland paths wind through the site, and if you're into birds or wildflowers you'll find yourself stopping frequently - there's genuine habitat here rather than ornamental planting. Spring brings carpets of bluebells if conditions are right, and autumn can be striking with the tree colours.

Walkers get the most from it. Not arduous stuff - more gentle rambling - but the kind of walking where you notice things. Kids can do it without complaint if they're the exploring type; younger ones might lose interest after 45 minutes. Twitchers and plant enthusiasts will want to allow a couple of hours minimum.

If you're staying at Esme's Escape, the glamping site just a few miles away near Yeovil, Johnson Park makes a logical morning outing before heading back for lunch. It's free access and worth an hour or so of your time, though it's not a destination in itself - more a local amenity that happens to work well if you're already in the area. Best visited in spring or early autumn when the reserve has more life to it.
