John's Close Wood

A modest woodland just outside Atherstone that rewards a quiet walk far more than its size suggests. John's Close Wood is the sort of place you stumble upon rather than plan a pilgrimage to, but once you're in among the trees, it's easy to see why locals keep coming back.

The woodland itself is fairly intimate - dense in places, open enough in others that light filters through properly. You'll find mixed broadleaf trees and a network of paths that twist through without being overly manicured. It's the kind of place where you can actually hear yourself think, which in the East Midlands isn't always guaranteed.

Walkers will get the most out of it, particularly those after a gentle forty-minute ramble rather than a full day's expedition. The paths are manageable, though muddy patches appear after rain. If you're staying at Nightingales Rustic Camping just up the road, it's genuinely worth a leg-stretch between pitches. Even from Atherstone Stables further out, it's not a massive detour.

This isn't the sort of woodland that photographs brilliantly or has a visitor centre with overpriced tea. There's no entrance fee that we can find, no formal opening hours - it simply exists as a proper working bit of countryside. Bring the kids if they'll manage twenty minutes without complaining; bring a dog without question. On a grey morning when the caravan park feels a bit confining, John's Close Wood does exactly what a local wood should: offers space, quiet, and a genuine escape.
