John Muir Statue

Bronze statue of a bearded man stares out towards the North Sea in Dunbar, and you're looking at one of conservation's patron saints. John Muir was born here in 1838, went on to fall madly in love with California's wilderness, and basically invented the national parks movement. The sculpture itself isn't flashy - it's there on the seafront, letting you stand beside it and picture the boy who'd have wandered these same cliffs.

Historians and anyone with even a passing interest in environmental movement stuff will find this genuinely moving. Kids won't linger long - it's a statue, after all - but families doing a broader Dunbar seafront walk will appreciate knowing who he was and why he mattered. The real value is context. You're meant to stand there, look out at what captivated him, then perhaps head to Dunbar's John Muir birthplace museum if you want the full story.

It's free, takes about five minutes to visit properly, though you could easily spend longer just looking out to sea. Best visited on a clear day when you can actually see across the water. The seafront itself is a pleasant walk, and if you're staying at Belhaven Bay Caravan Park just down the coast, you've basically got it on your doorstep. Combine it with a proper Dunbar harbour wander - there's decent fish and chips nearby and views that explain why someone like Muir got so passionate about protecting wild places.
