John Hansard Gallery

The John Hansard Gallery sits on the University of Southampton campus - a proper modern art space that doesn't announce itself with fanfare but rewards a visit if you're into contemporary work. It's free to get in, which is brilliant, and the building itself has that clean, purposeful feel of a university gallery rather than anything trying too hard to impress.

Inside you'll find rotating exhibitions across painting, sculpture, photography and installation work. The programme tends toward the thoughtful rather than the sensational - recent shows have leaned into emerging artists and conceptual pieces that make you think rather than just look. It's intimate enough that you won't feel lost for hours, but substantial enough that you can easily spend 90 minutes poking about if something grabs you.

This works best for art students, serious gallery-goers, and anyone who gets genuinely interested in contemporary practice. Kids might fidget unless they're the type who actually engage with art. Families doing a broader Hampshire break will find it a decent rainy-afternoon stop, but it's not the sort of place you'd plan a trip around.

Southampton itself is only a few minutes away, which makes it easy to slip in between other coastal or New Forest activities. If you're camped at Sunnydale Farm or Bell Tent Glamping - both just a handful of miles out - it's worth checking what's on before you go. Free entry and no crowds beats fighting through a packed attraction any day.
