Jock's Hill

The walk up Jock's Hill isn't dramatic, but it's proper rewarding once you get to the top. You're looking at a modest forested hill just outside Mintlaw in Aberdeenshire, the sort of place locals know well but tourists often walk past without realising what's there. The trees are dense enough to feel like you've left civilisation, even though you haven't gone far, and the views across the surrounding countryside open up nicely once you clear the canopy.

It's ideal if you're staying at Aden Caravan & Camping down the road and fancy a couple of hours away from the site. The trail isn't taxing - families with reasonably confident walkers will manage it fine, though it's muddy after rain so bring proper boots. There's something honest about Scottish forest walks like this one. No visitor centre, no gift shop, just trees and a hill and the wind in your face.

The woodland itself is mixed conifer and deciduous, so you get colour through the seasons. Spring's decent for birdwatching if that's your thing. Allow an hour and a half for the round trip without rushing, maybe two if you want to linger at the top and soak in the view.

Free to access, naturally. It's the kind of spot that rewards you for finding it rather than advertising itself. Worth a visit if you're in the area and need to stretch your legs, though don't expect anything that'll change your life.
