Jagdens

A proper chunk of working forest just outside Shaftesbury, Jagdens is the sort of place you stumble upon rather than plan for. Ancient woodland with a real sense of being away from things, even though you're only minutes from town. The trees are substantial - proper old growth in places - and there's something grounding about walking under that kind of canopy.

It's ideal for a half-morning woodland wander or an afternoon ramble if you're staying at Chalke Valley Camping nearby. The terrain is uneven and rooty in patches, so decent boots are sensible, but nothing that would stop a reasonably fit walker. Bring kids who can handle muddy paths without complaining - this isn't a manicured nature reserve with information boards and benches.

There's no obvious visitor infrastructure here, which is rather the point. No gift shop, no car park facilities that I could see, just forest. That's either brilliant or a letdown depending on what you wanted. For forest bathing types and anyone after some quiet woodland air while based in the Chalke Valley area, it delivers that in spades.

Worth allowing an hour or two depending on how deep you want to venture. Go when it's been dry enough that the paths aren't a quagmire. Late morning tends to be quieter than afternoons, and the light filtering through the canopy is genuinely lovely then.
