Jack's Pond

A small, quiet lake just east of Sandy that's genuinely lovely for a morning walk. Nothing flashy here - just clear water, reed beds, and the kind of stillness you don't get near town. Birdwatchers absolutely rate it; you'll see grebes, herons, and various ducks depending on the season.

The main path loops the pond in about 45 minutes at a leisurely pace. It's flat throughout, so fine for families with younger kids, though there's not much to keep them occupied beyond the water itself - bring a small net or binoculars to make it more engaging. On a still morning the reflections are proper beautiful, and there's a bench or two if you fancy stopping.

I'd allow an hour including a sit-down. It works brilliantly as a half-day add-on if you're staying at Cambridgeshire Lakes, which is only 3.4 miles away. That makes it ideal for breaking up a longer park holiday or for keen birders who want somewhere peaceful without the crowds you get at bigger nature reserves.

Best visited early, before day-trippers arrive. Winter's quiet too if you don't mind the cold. Admission appears free - it's unmanned, so just rock up. Bring proper binoculars if wildlife's your thing; a basic pair won't cut it for the smaller birds.
