Itton Hill

The walk up Itton Hill rewards you with proper views across the Wye Valley - that stretch of border country between Wales and England that doesn't get nearly enough attention. It's not a brutal climb, which means families and regular walkers can both manage it without complaint, though you'll want decent boots if it's been wet.

From the summit you get sight lines toward the Forest of Dean on one side and back toward Chepstow on the other. The hill itself is unremarkable - moorland and bracken mostly - but that's rather the point. No crowds, no visitor centre, no gift shop. Just you, the elements, and a genuinely rewarding panorama that takes maybe ninety minutes up and down if you're not dawdling.

Historians might recognise the earthworks scattered about - Iron Age camp stuff, the sort of thing you spot when you know what to look for. Most walkers won't bother themselves with that and that's fine too.

It works perfectly as a half-day excursion from Chepstow or as a break from park time at Penhein Glamping, which sits less than three miles away. Weather permitting, go early morning when the light's best and you've got the place to yourself. Bring water, a map, and realistic expectations - this isn't Ben Nevis - and you'll leave satisfied.
