Itchen Valley Country Park

The Itchen Valley Country Park sits just outside Southampton and delivers what you'd hope from a country park without any pretension. It's a proper riverside walk along the Itchen, with meadows that flood seasonally and patches of woodland that feel genuinely wild rather than manicured. You'll see kingfishers if you're lucky, and the water itself is surprisingly clear in places.

The park works best for families with younger kids or anyone after an easy riverside stroll - walkers wanting something more challenging will find themselves finished in an hour. The terrain is flat and accessible, which is brilliant if you've got pushchairs or elderly relatives in tow. The meadows attract a decent variety of birds and insect life, particularly in spring and early summer.

There's no entrance fee and no visitor centre, so arrive with realistic expectations. What you get is space, some genuine countryside that's genuinely close to the city, and the sort of quiet that feels rare this close to Southampton. Come mid-morning on a weekday if you want it to yourself.

It's the sort of place that justifies staying in the area rather than racing straight through to the New Forest or Beaulieu.
