Isle of Wight Coast Path

The Isle of Wight Coast Path is a proper walk, not a gentle stroll. This 67-mile coastal trail loops the entire island, offering the sort of dramatic cliff views and hidden coves that make the south coast special. You won't find manicured gardens or visitor centres here - it's raw coastline, red sandstone cliffs, and the kind of solitude you've earned through your own two feet.

Most people don't tackle the whole thing. Instead, they pick sections from Shanklin - the eastern starting point - and work outwards. The stretch between Shanklin and Sandown is popular for a reason: the cliffs are genuinely impressive, the walking is straightforward, and you can grab fish and chips back in town afterwards. Further west, towards Ventnor and Freshwater, the going gets steeper but the crowds thin considerably.

Walkers make up the bulk of visitors, though keen photographers and geology types will find plenty to absorb. Families with young children should think carefully about stamina and cliff-edge safety. Allow a full day for any serious section; three to four hours covers the Shanklin highlights comfortably.

It's free, obviously - it's a public footpath. Go outside peak summer holidays if you want breathing room. Spring and autumn offer the best light and the least congestion.
