Isle of Purbeck Brewery

The Isle of Purbeck Brewery operates from the Bankes Arms in Swanage, turning out proper craft beers in a town better known for its seaside charm than its brewing scene. It's a small operation - genuinely micro in scale - so don't expect a sprawling visitor centre with merchandise and tours lasting hours. What you get instead is the chance to try locally brewed ales in their own pub, which feels like the right way round. The beers are solid stuff, nothing pretentious, just the kind of thing you'd want after a coastal walk. The Bankes Arms itself is the draw here as much as the brewery; it's a proper drinker's pub rather than a tourist trap, which Swanage has plenty of. If you're staying at Ulwell Holiday Park or Swanage Bay View Holiday Park, it's an easy trip into town. Even from Woodyhyde Campsite a few miles inland, it makes a decent evening out. Best visited when you're actually thirsty rather than as a scheduled attraction - call ahead to check opening hours, as smaller operations can be unpredictable. Real value lies in combining it with a pint after exploring the Purbeck Hills or the seafront, rather than treating it as a destination in itself. Works well for adults, less so if you've got young kids in tow.
