Island Covert

Island Covert is a woodland patch just outside Worcester that doesn't shout about itself, which is partly why it's worth knowing about. It's a proper forest walk rather than a manicured park - the kind of place where you're navigating roots and fallen branches, not tarmac paths. The woodland itself is dense enough to feel like you've actually left town behind, even though Worcester's only a few miles away.

It works best for walkers who don't mind a bit of rough ground underfoot and families with older kids who can handle uneven terrain. If you're after playground equipment and smooth pushchair routes, look elsewhere. What you get instead is the real thing - trees, quiet, and the occasional glimpse of wildlife if you're lucky.

There's no visitor centre, no car park with facilities, no entry fee posted anywhere obvious. That's part of the appeal. It's the kind of spot you find yourself in because you're exploring the Worcester area properly, not because it's on a list of attractions. Allow an hour or so depending on how deep into the woodland you fancy venturing.

If you're based at one of the caravan parks nearby - Dawleys is closest at just over three miles, Cotswold Grange at four - Island Covert makes a solid morning's excursion. It pairs well with a proper walk rather than sitting in the car park eating ice cream. Not everyone's cup of tea, but if you actually like forests rather than the idea of them, you'll get it.
