Irstead Staithe

The water's the thing at Irstead Staithe. It's a proper working wharf on the Norfolk Broads, east of Great Yarmouth, where you can actually watch boats loading and unloading cargo the way they have done for centuries. You'll see wherries and modern workboats side by side, a working landscape rather than a polished tourist attraction.

It's genuinely worth the drive if you're staying at one of the nearby parks like Norfolk Broads Country Park or Clippesby Hall. The Staithe gives you a sense of how people actually live and work on the Broads, rather than just messing about on hired boats. History types will appreciate the continuity - this place has been functioning as a trading post for generations. Families with restless kids might find thirty minutes adequate unless they're genuinely keen on boats and water.

There's no visitor centre or facilities to speak of, which is precisely why it works. Free to visit, though there's nowhere official to park - you need to be considerate about where you leave the car.
